Biography

Brantley Gilbert knows that tomorrow is no guarantee.  Just over five years ago the talented singer/songwriter was ignoring his deepest ambition of becoming a country singer and was just going through the motions of everyday life.  It wasn’t until a nearly-fatal car accident that Brantley opened his eyes, realized the importance of living each day to the fullest, and decided to pursue his love for music as a career.

Brantley was born and raised in the small town of Jefferson, Georgia, just outside of Athens city limits.  It is that upbringing and small town influence Brantley credits toward allowing him to cultivate his unique sound.  With well-known rock bands REM and the B-52’s having roots nearby, Brantley’s taste in music always swayed toward a rock feel, but his true-to-life testimony of heartache, trials, triumph, and success found a home in country music.

After taking the stage night-after-night with just his guitar and opening for other country artists throughout the southeast, Brantley began to notice familiar faces in the crowds.  A group of believers who shared Brantley’s passion for life and music had developed, and pretty soon the following had taken-on a life of its own.  Brantley quickly realized that his acoustic shows—however intimate—didn’t satisfy his audience’s thirst for his rock-infused country music.  In order to meet their demand, Brantley formed a band.

“We went from these acoustic shows to a bona fide country-rock-soul show that is wide-ass open,” says Gilbert.  “Even when we play a ballad it’s high energy.”

With the fans demanding new music from Brantley, he came to Nashville, Tennessee where he soon signed with Warner Chappell Publishing and began to develop music for a debut album release.  One of his songs, “The Best of Me,” was recorded by Jason Aldean and earned a spot on his latest album, WIDE OPEN.  Since, Brantley has signed a record deal with Average Joe’s Entertainment and collaborated with top-charting act and labelmate Colt Ford to write and record, “Dirt Road Anthem,” which is currently featured on Ford’s multiple-week Top 25 Billboard album, RIDE THROUGH THE COUNTRY.

“I’ve realized that life can be very short, and everyone should take advantage of it,” he said. “If you’re gonna live, do something with it. Make it great.”

And great it is.  Brantley will celebrate a national album release in 2009 with A MODERN DAY PRODIGAL SON which features hit singles, “G.R.I.T.S.” and “Whenever We’re Alone.”

As tour dates multiply throughout the South, Brantley’s fan base continues to expand, and like most artists these days, fans can stay updated about tour dates and news via MySpace. His page garners more than 25,000 listeners daily— a number that has brought him to the #1 spot on MySpace Music Charts for both country and southern rock.

JYPSI (From youngest to oldest:)

--Lillie Mae, 18, possessed of talent far beyond her years. She is recognized as a vocalist of great power and subtlety, capable of roof-raising joy and heart-rending emotion. Lillie Mae is also an exquisitely expressive fiddle player, with a bluesy, note-bending style as versatile as it is captivating.

--Frank, 21, recognized as a flat-top virtuoso when the guitar was still bigger than he was. The musical anchor of the band, Frank is essentially its unspoken conductor, bringing to the proceedings an impeccable rhythmic sense, then launching into fiery, lightning-fast solo work.

--Scarlett, 25, combining stellar musicianship, featuring an expressive mandolin style that offers just the right flourishes on everything from bluegrass to the Beatles, with a striking visual presence that reflects a lifelong interest in fashion and a model's sense of flair and sophistication.

--Amber-Dawn, 28, a fountain of energy who is often the band's on-stage announcer, spark-plug and cheerleader. An accomplished fiddler deeply rooted in the traditional yet capable of a range of styles, she is, like both her sisters, a rare combination of strikingly talented and visually arresting.

RANDY HOUSER

As illustrated in his breakthrough single, Randy Houser is a breathtaking vocalist with fire and conviction at his core. The songs he has chosen by other Nashville writers for this album are superb showcases for the vocal side of his talent. In addition to “Anything Goes,” they include the sensual “Strange” and the ultra-cool, groove-saturated “How Many Times,” the latter featuring harmony vocals by superstar Vince Gill.

Randy grew up in central Mississippi. He was born in Jackson and raised in Lake, a small town between Jackson and Meridian. Musically, it’s a region between the Blues and R&B of the Delta and the hard-core country music of the Deep South. There was always plenty of gospel music on the radio as well.

One listen to his soul-drenched singing is enough to convince you that you are in the presence of a masterful performer. One scan of his deeply felt lyrics is all the proof you need to see that this is a major songwriting talent. And one meeting with this smiling, endearing, open-hearted personality is all it takes to make you believe he deserves to be a star.

That indefinable something, called charisma, is all over his exceptional debut CD. Whether plunging into sadness or leaping for joy in song, Randy Houser has what all great country artists have – believability.

RECKLESS KELLY

These are very good times for Reckless Kelly. With the release of Bulletproof in 2008, the Austin-based roots-rockers known for the integrity of their musical approach, the hard-core energy of their live shows and the fierce loyalty of their fans, turned up the intensity on their career. The album quickly became their biggest seller, hitting the Billboard 200 and reaching the Top 25 of the magazine's Top Country Albums chart. It contained their first #1 on both the Texas and Americana charts, "Ragged as the Road," and earned them a nomination as Best Band or Duo at the 2009 Americana Music Awards, a show that put them on stage with the country's best at the Ryman Auditorium. It also contained "American Blood" and "God Forsaken Town," widely regarded songs that link them to a working-class tradition of socially conscious music that stretches from Woody Guthrie to Bruce Springsteen.

With new album Somewhere in Time, the band digs deep into its roots, revisiting the music of Pinto Bennett, who with his band the Famous Motel Cowboys influenced a generation of musicians in the Northwest and served as a mentor and idol to Willy and his brother Cody, whose fiddle, mandolin, harmonica and vocal work help propel Reckless Kelly. In the company of their bandmates, David Abeyta on lead guitar and lap steel, Jay Nazz on drums, and Chris Schelske on bass, they explore their country influences and re-introduce Bennett's music to a new generation of fans while placing their indelible, rock-edged stamp on it.

“While this is Pinto’s material, this is very much a Reckless Kelly record.  It’s simply a bunch of great songs we thought people should hear," explains Cody." A lot of Texas bands have been pushing country more toward rock," says Jay, "but to go back to playing real country music turned out to be extremely rewarding for us as a band.” "It's not too far a departure from what we've done in the past," adds Willy, "but it reminds me of the old days when we were playing four sets a night, doing a lot more honky-tonk stuff, playing the real dance halls."

Highlights include "You Cared Enough to Lie," a honky-tonk masterpiece tailor made for the stage, the tragedy of "The Ballad of Elano DeLeon" and "Some People's Kids," which updates the kind of rock/country hybrid explored on the West Coast beginning in the late '60s. Instrumentally, the project kicks up the classic country flourishes--there is steel guitar on seven tracks--but that in-the-pocket rhythm section, Cody's fiddle and mandolin, the crisp guitars and raw energy are all pure Reckless Kelly.

Much in the way that Waylon Jennings found his narrative voice through the words and songs of Billy Joe Shaver on the classic album Honky Tonk Heroes, Somewhere in Time finds Reckless Kelly using Bennett’s songs as a tool to elucidate another aspect of their true artistic identity.

With their increased visibility has come the opportunity to give back and 2009 saw the group's first Celebrity Softball Jam raise $30,000 for Austin charities. They have also, in addition to appearances at military base benefits, launched Reckless Soldiers, using their website to help military personnel connect with family, friends and supporters.

Whether it’s their dedication to charity work, playing live or the art of writing a timeless tune, Reckless Kelly is tireless in their pursuit of excellence. It’s this attitude and their near legendary propensity for a good time that ensures their success as artists. The Somewhere in Time project is no exception. "I think this time," adds Willy, "we did again what we always set out to do, which is to make a record we can be proud of."
